Why iOS 5 is Great For Your Kitchen

There are a lot of great food apps for iOS. Epicurious is free and full of great recipes, Michael Ruhlman's Ratio is great when you need to recalculate the portions of a recipe and Smart Chef Substitutions takes some of the pain out of forgetting an ingredient. But the trouble with using just one of those great apps is exactly that: it can only be one.

Say you're looking through Mark Bittman's app and discover you need to change the number of servings for a bouillabaisse for your party. Not possible on old iOS 4. On iOS 5 you can swipe to switch between apps. We also keep a TV in the kitchen for background music or for eating alone. But the ability to mirror the iPad on a TV means we can use that screen in any part of our kitchen without having to keep the iPad with us.

The ability to swipe to other apps in iOS5 is going to open us up to using the iPad all the time in the kitchen. Now we just need to figure out a better way to keep our iPad clean than putting it in a plastic bag...

Do you use your iPad in the Kitchen? Tell us how in the comments.
