Nathaniel's Nautical Nursery

Name: Nathaniel (Nat), 2.5 years
Location: Pacific Palisades, CA
Room Size: 300 sq ft

Yesterday we saw Cooper's room; today we're visiting her brother Nat's room. Designer Kristine and homeowner Morgan again worked together to create this memorable boy's room. Nat's room hinges on the statement wall covered in a stylized sailboat wallpaper. Since they wanted to keep the yellow walls and white shutters, Kristine needed to find something that would add a statement while tying the existing color scheme together.

I asked both Kristine, the designer, and Morgan, the homeowner, about the process of putting together this room.

How would you describe the look and feel of this room?
Kristine: Preppy, nautical, and young.

What was the inspiration for the room?
Kristine: The Katie Ridder Sailboat wallpaper

What is your favorite piece or element?
Kristine: The wallpaper. I love it! I think it's cool and groovy...and yet, young and boyish.

What was the biggest challenge decorating this room?
Kristine: We decided to work around the existing yellow paint and white shutters in the room - so we chose a bold navy blue on the moldings and it brought everything into place!

You made the shadow box above the changing table. What did you include and why?
Morgan: The shadow box includes Nathaniel's birth announcement, the outfit he wore home from the hospital, his hospital bracelet and some design elements from his nursery as a keepsake. I thought it was a nice way to preserve this moment in time for down the road when his room is plastered in posters and sports figures.

I love the vintage Mickey Mouse stuffed animal and Mickey Mouse phone. What's the story behind these pieces? Do you have a special connection with Mickey?
Morgan: The phone came from my mother's office (she was a pediatrician). She had her office in our house when I was a kid. She passed away before the kids were born, so it's nice to have her memory represented in Nathaniel's room. The stuffed animal was Nathaniel's first gift from my father and he was always wrestling with it as a newborn. He's never been to Disneyland but he's crazy about Mickey!

If money were no object, what's your dream source?
Kristine: Mine is always 1st Dibs; they have so many fabulous antiques from vendors around the world.

Thanks, Kristine and Morgan! See more of Kristine's work at Jackson Paige, and check back tomorrow to see Nathaniel's sister's room.
