Lauren's Floorplan: Sharpie Style!

Lauren's Floorplan: Sharpie Style!

It's not often these days, with two little ones in tow, that I get an excuse to do something artsy, so I spurned technology in favor of a good ol' Sharpie marker. Late one night after the kids were sound asleep I furiously measured everything in the kitchen. Then the following morning (with Lucy napping in the Ergo carrier and Violet drawing "her own" kitchen beside me), I created a one-inch scale floor plan of the space.

It looked pretty boring considering it's a tiny kitchen with your basic counters, refrigerator, and stove, so I decided to have some fun with the labeling (and yes - now it's crazytown). The room is 8'x12', with a tiny entryway off to the side. We've got your working triangle, which is nice, but we definitely need more prep space next to the stove and more storage.

After taking measurements, I determined that my evil plan (muhahaha) will work: I want to move the itty bitty counter that is currently beside the fridge over next to the stove to serve as prep space. Then I'm going to plug a BILLY-esque bookshelf from IKEA into the space beside the fridge to provide additional storage. That should also quench my desire for some open shelving without giving my husband a heart attack.

What did you discover by creating your floor plan?
