Marble countertops have become part of the renovation/decor vernacular thanks to TV makeover shows (though a distant second to the ever-popular granite countertop). But despite marble's beauty, it's rarely mentioned as a material for DIY projects because of its weight and cost, which makes this custom made midcentury inspired home office project unique...

Maybe most impressive about this DIY desk project was much of it was cut, constructed, and finished within the tight confines of a high rise apartment! The finished design captures the spirit of compact midcentury American furniture you'll sometimes see in thrift stores, flea markets, and collector shops, complete with a cool little side bookshelf built into the desk.

The only problem yourpalthomps faced upon completing his desk was a modern day issue: the tangle of wires from his computer are visible due to the open space design of his desk:

Originally this interior box was meant to house my desktop computer, but when measuring everything I forgot to account for wires being plugged into the back. So now the damn thing doesn't fit. I guess I'll put books or something in there instead. The open back of the desk makes cord management annoying, I'm probably going to buy some of that black plastic tubing to minimize the nest back there.

He might do well adding something like this Leg Cord Manager on the back of his desk, or at the least, hiding the tangle of cords and his power strip within something like the Bluelounge CableBin (which would additionally complement his design).

If you like this marble top idea, but can't fathom the idea of hauling a 100lbs marble slab into your home and/or building your own desk, there's always the faux contact paper route.
